Statement by Joseph A. Califano, Jr., CASA Chairman and President, on the Decline in NYC's Teen Smoking Rate Being Lowest on Record

NEW YORK, NY, January 2, 2008 – "Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s announcement of New York City’s teen smoking rate declining by 20 percent sets a standard for every mayor and governor in the country. If every governor and mayor followed the comprehensive campaign of Mayor Bloomberg to reduce smoking in their states and cities by increasing the cost of cigarettes as a deterrent for teens, creating smoke-free spaces and making quit programs widely available, I am convinced that the rest of the nation can reduce smoking among teens to the same low level as New York City. That level is only a third of the national average. If the nation reached the New York City level we would reduce the number of teen smokers from 4.5 million to 1.5 million."
