Addiction Science White Paper

CASAColumbia is developing a white paper to look at whether addiction may be one disease of the brain with different forms or expressions. The paper will review the similarities and differences in brain changes and behaviors associated with addiction involving nicotine, alcohol, illegal and prescription drugs and other compulsive behaviors.

Background

  • Historically, addiction has been addressed by substance or expression (e.g., alcoholism, heroin, gambling, etc.)
  • A growing body of evidence suggests that these may be different forms of one underlying disease
