Addiction Studies: Collaboration with North Shore LIJ | CASAColumbia

Health System Collaboration

Health System Collaboration

This project seeks to design and then evaluate ways of incorporating addiction prevention and treatment practices into current care procedures at North Shore-LIJ Health System hospitals. The project will also integrate addiction prevention and treatment into the hospital’s professional health education programs and activities.

The Details

  • The goal of the initiative is to improve access to quality and cost-effective health care throughout the North Shore-LIJ hospital system, a New York-based award-winning health system that includes world-class hospitals
  • Examples of project activities include improving and expanding screening and early intervention procedures, training doctors in addiction and coordinating addiction treatment with other medical care

Background

  • Few people are routinely screened for risky substance use by their doctors and only about 1 in 10 people with addiction involving alcohol and drugs, other than nicotine, receive any form of treatment; most who get help do not receive evidence-based care
