Statement on the New York City Council decision to ban use of e-cigarettes under the Smoke-Free Air Act

December 20, 2013

CASAColumbia applauds the decision of the NY City Council to regulate e-cigarettes as tobacco products under the Smoke-Free Air Act. Given the history of tobacco product marketing in this country and the horrific health consequences and costs related to tobacco use and addiction involving nicotine, the Council has recognized that we need to be be very careful about endorsing e-cigarettes without first developing a solid understanding of their impact on public health, including the anticipated market for new users.
