THE NATIONAL CENTER ON ADDICTION AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE (CASA) AT COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY is a unique think/action tank that brings together under one roof all the professional disciplines (health policy, medicine, communications, economics, sociology, anthropology, law, law enforcement, business, religion, education) needed to study and combat all forms of substance abuse -- illegal drugs, pills, alcohol and tobacco -- as they affect all aspects of society.

Counsel

We seek a JD from an accredited law school and in good standing with the Bar of the State of NY with at least 5 years experience to serve as General Counsel:  to be responsible for CASA’s activities related to contracts and contract negotiations, grants, consulting agreements, data security and other legal issues as they arise; to staff the Citizens’ Commission to Protect the Truth - a Commission headed by CASA Board Chair, Joseph A. Califano, Jr. - for the first time in the nation's history, past U.S. Secretaries of Health, as well as all former U.S. Surgeons General and former Directors of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - Republican and Democrat from every Administration over the last forty years - have joined together to prevent youth from smoking - the only route to a smoke-free society; and to staff various projects for the President and Mr. Califano.

As a member of a close working Senior Staff, this individual will be the primary liaison and support to principal investigators and program managers with respect to preparing and reviewing grant and contract agreements, and advising on and monitoring business, fiscal and regulatory aspects of contracts related to the organization’s programmatic initiatives.

Preferred qualifications include experience with contract drafting and negotiations, privacy and data security issues, intellectual property, and the submission of amici briefs. 

CASA’s Counsel reports directly to the President and for day-to-day operational purposes routinely supports CASA’s Vice President for Finance and Administration.
